Holy sh*t. You nailed it. I’ve long harbored an aversion to the #girlboss movement, though I couldn’t pinpoint why. Much of it has felt disingenuous and seemingly focused on everything being cute and pink rather than professional and utilitarian (because, as you point out, we can’t promote feminism unless it’s aesthetically pleasing, right? [Insert eye roll here]). I don’t want to be a Girl Boss; I just want to be The Boss. Nor am I a “badass babe" or a “she-E-O.” How will we ever create parity if we support an environment that calls for making up adorable job titles and decorating them with sparkles? Kudos to you for telling it like it is and highlighting the less-than-woke practices of Girl Boss culture. Let’s all do better from here on out.
